The long-awaited Mumbai-Pune link will finally be inaugurated shortly on the occasion of Maharashtra Day. The link comprises two tunnels, one of which is among the world’s widest. There are also two cable-stayed bridges. The total distance from Mumbai to Pune will now be 6 km less and the travel time reduced by 20-25 minutes. What’s more, the route will bypass the steep, accident-prone, Khandala-Lonavala ghats. PICS/MSRDC

The Mumbai-Pune Expressway Missing Link project features two impressive tunnels — one measuring 1.68 km and the other 8.87 km in length
With a width of 23.5 metres each, these are among the widest tunnels in the world
Once operational, the new stretch will bypass the dangerous ghat section, reducing travel time by approximately 30 minutes and offering a smoother, flatter journey for commuters. The 13.3-km Missing Link between Khopoli exit and Kusgaon will be toll-free
The project also includes two cable-stayed bridges of 650 metres and 950 metres, built by Afcons Infrastructure. The tallest pylon of the cable-stayed bridge stands at 184 metres
The Missing Link project incorporates state-of-the-art technology and safety systems. The tunnels are equipped with a water mist fire suppression system, fire hydrants, linear heat detection, voice evacuation system, and an advanced tunnel ventilation system
A comprehensive Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS), surveillance cameras, and SOS emergency response points ensure round-the-clock monitoring and quick incident response
