The protest, attended by workers and legislators, highlighted the ongoing issue of housing for families of former textile mill employees, many of whom have been awaiting allotment for decades

The protesters, carrying banners and raising slogans, emphasised that housing is their rightful claim, often referring to promises made in the past regarding land from closed mills

The protesters, carrying banners and raising slogans, emphasised that housing is their rightful claim, often referring to promises made in the past regarding land from closed mills. The core demand remains allocation of affordable homes within Mumbai limits, rather than relocation to distant areas

Several legislators were present at the rally and took a strong stand, declaring that if their demands are not met, they will not allow the state budget session to proceed on Wednesday

Last year, Deputy Chief Minister and Urban Development and Housing Minister Eknath Shinde, in a written reply in the legislature, said that so far 98,619 textile mill workers have become eligible for homes in Mumbai as per the special campaign conducted by the state-run Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) and labour department.
