Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday directed all government departments to strengthen monsoon preparedness and ensure that plans are implemented effectively on the ground instead of remaining limited to paper. Reviewing the state's readiness for the rainy season during a high-level meeting in Mumbai with civic officials, senior government officials from other agencies, and the police department, he instructed departments to reassess their preparations over the next 15 days and tackle any shortcomings, asserting that the administration must improve its response based on past experiences.

Monsoon preparedness

In Mumbai, 43 major pumping stations have been made operational to tackle heavy rain and waterlogging, while a smart pump monitoring system has also been introduced.

Travel-related measures in place

At the meeting on Friday, authorities said train speeds on railway routes in the Konkan and ghat sections will be regulated during heavy rains for safety reasons. Special precautions are also being taken to prevent accidents on the Mumbai-Goa Highway and other major national highways across Maharashtra.

Push for AI-based control system

During the meeting, Fadnavis suggested that an integrated Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based ‘Command and Control System' for disaster management be developed to improve coordination between government agencies during emergencies. The proposed system is expected to help authorities monitor rainfall, flooding, traffic movement, and emergency response in real time, while also enabling quicker decision-making and faster assistance to affected citizens.

Security, other arrangements

Security arrangements have been strengthened at tourist destinations in view of possible rain-related incidents. Around 3000 hospital beds have been kept reserved, and disaster management control rooms will function round-the-clock. Officials also said that necessary planning has been done to ensure health services remain operational in remote and tribal regions such as Nandurbar and Melghat during the rainy season.
