With an aim to enhance road safety, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed the state representatives to expedite the process of Automated Vehicle Testing Stations (ATS) in the state.

Every year, nearly nine lakh of state's 36.80 lakh transport vehicles will need to undergo mandatory tests. To streamline this process and improve transparency, CM has directed that all such inspections be carried out only through ATS, in line with upcoming central rules.

On Thursday, Fadnavis, along with State Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik and officials of the transport department, held a meeting at Varsha (CM's official residence) in which the automated testing station status was reviewed by the government.

Centre mandates ATS

The govt of India issued a notification under the Central Motor Vehicle Rules on Sept 23, 2023, making it compulsory, from April 1, 2025, for all transport vehicles to undergo fitness tests only at registered centres. As a result, traditional system of human inspection will be stopped. ATS in Maharashtra are being established to conduct mandatory, sensor-based fitness tests for vehicles, reducing human intervention.

Key numbers

No. of centres already been completed in state: 7
No. of centres to become operational August end: 37
Total number of centres state plans to set up: 53
