Maharashtra: 17 injured as gate at temple in Maharashtra's Nagpur collapses, operations underway

At least 17 people were injured, three of them seriously, when part of an under-construction gate of the Mahalaxmi Jagadamba Devasthan temple in Koradi area of Nagpur district in Maharashtra collapsed on Saturday, the officials said, reported the PTI.

"Seventeen workers were injured, three of whom are critical. They have been hospitalised. Rescue operations were launched immediately by the police, fire brigade and those in the vicinity. NDRF personnel are also at the site. The operation is being monitored by District Collector Vipin Itankar and Deputy Commissioner of Police Niketan Kadam," an official said, according to the PTI.

According to preliminary information, some workers may have been trapped under the debris. However, there have been no reports of any fatalities so far.

An eyewitness told ANI, "We rescued nine people. The slab collapsed suddenly, and people fell down. They were bleeding and in shock. Many were trapped under the debris."

According to officials, 15 to 16 people with minor injuries were quickly taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Three individuals were reported to be in critical condition. Rescue teams arrived promptly at the scene, and debris is being cleared using heavy machinery.

Sanjay Meena, Metropolitan Commissioner of NMRDA told the ANI, "15-16 people were injured. There are no grievous injuries. They are in hospital...Construction work of Koradi temple was ongoing here. Contractors under NMRDA were working here. How this happened can be spoke about only after a complete inquiry. We will have a detailed inquiry...There are no casualties so far."

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) rushed to the site and launched a rescue and relief operations.

Inspector Krupal Mule of 5 Battalion of NDRF says, "When the team of 5 Battalion NDRF reached here, the structure had completely collapsed. When we asked, we were told that everyone who was working here were injured but all of them were rescued...Nobody was found trapped here. We first conducted a physical search here, followed by a canine search. There doesn't seem to be anyone trapped here so far...But we will first have to clear the debris, and only after that can a comment be made...It is being said that construction work was ongoing and due to vibrations (of equipment), it all collapsed at once. There is a 4-5 ft tall pile of debris here."

Rescue operations were ongoing at the spot.
