The Indian Youth Congress (IYC) on Tuesday staged a protest march towards the BJP headquarters in Delhi, demanding the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah over alleged police brutality against students during the July 20 protest at Jantar Mantar, news agency PTI reported.
The protesters began their march from the Delhi Congress office on DDU Marg as police stepped up security in the area. Barricades were placed along the route and buses were stationed to transport those detained during the demonstration.
Delhi IYC President Akshay Lakra said the protest was aimed at demanding accountability over injuries suffered by students and protesters during last month's demonstration.
"Our single-point agenda is demanding justice for those who are injured," Lakra told PTI.
He said the protesters had waited for Parliament to address the issue and were now taking their demands to the streets.
Lakra also alleged that the government and Home Ministry had shown insufficient sensitivity towards students and protesters during the episode.
The demonstration comes days after the Delhi Police registered an FIR on August 21 concerning pellet injuries, allegedly suffered by student Sahil Lochab during the July 20 protest.
The FIR was filed on Lochab's complaint after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi staged a protest lasting more than six hours at the Parliament Street police station, demanding action in the matter.
Lochab, a resident of Najafgarh, had alleged that he was struck by multiple metal pellets during the protest and subsequently lost vision in his right eye.
Police registered the case against unidentified persons under Sections 118(1) and 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Lakra said the Youth Congress would continue pursuing legal remedies alongside its street protests.
He alleged that the use of force against students was unjustified and said the organisation would continue seeking answers from the authorities.
The July 20 protest at Jantar Mantar had witnessed clashes between protesters and security personnel, with allegations of injuries and excessive use of force becoming a subsequent political issue.
