2 killed, 3 injured in Expressway accident

Two persons lost their lives and three others were injured near Kamshet tunnel when their car collided with a speeding SUV from behind on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway on Sunday evening.


The Wadgaon Maval police did not file the case till late evening.

A Wadgaon Maval police officer said, "The deceased were identified as Nitin Krishnarao Chavan (45) and Sandeep Thorat (44) both from Karad in Satara District. The three injured include Manisha Chavan (40) - wife of the deceased Nitin Chavan, Vijay Chavan (25) and Harish Chavan (21). The deceased died on thier way to Lokmanya Hospital at Nigdi."

The officer added, "The SUV's (MMH-46/P-6632) driver and three others injured were also taken to the nearby hospital for treatment of superficial injuries. The car carrying the deceased (MH09/S-1055) was in a bad shape. The nature of the accident is yet to be ascertained."

Havaldar Shitole, who was at the spot, said, "The nature of the accident appears to be complex and we cannot file a case of accident. The SUV driver who was responsible for the collision is being treated. Many other details of the accident are yet to be known."

Wadgaon Maval Police Inspector S S More, who was busy with the police bandobast at Gahunje Stadium for IPL cricket match, was not available for comment.

Earlier, in another accident on the expressway at Kivle village, a speeding jeep tyre burst' leading to the death of one Rajendra Baban Pawar (28) of Sion, Mumbai, and 10 other injured when the vehicle rammed into the side margin of the highway on Saturday morning. u00a0
