Jammu: The chain hunger strike resumed by the AIIMS coordination committee (ACC), demanding setting up of an AIIMS in Jammu, entered its third day today with 25 people taking their turn to sit for the protest.

"It is the third day of the strike today and people from various sections have taken their turn today to sit on the hunger strike in support of the AIIMS demand. We will continue our agitation it till our demand is met," said Abhinav Sharma, chairman of the ACC, an amalgamation of various civil society groups spearheading the agitation.

The ACC had earlier temporarily suspended its chain hunger strike on June 18 after Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh and his cabinet colleagues had given a written assurance of getting an "appropriate order" by July 20.

It resumed the agitation on July 21, after the deadline expired. Sharma said the constituents of coordination committee will hold a meeting later today to discuss the future course of action in which they might decide to intensify the agitation.

"BJP has betrayed the people of Jammu, they broke all the promises they made prior to the elections. "They promised to end discrimination against the Jammu region, but the contrary has happened. Since BJP has come to share power with PDP, the discrimination against Jammu has increased manifold and shifting of AIIMS is one such example," an ACC member said.
