Around 2,500 Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers left for Nagpur yesterday by a special train to gherao the State Assembly today to protest against several issues dogging the common man.

The winter session commenced yesterday and BJP state president Sudhir Mungantiwar would lead the agitation. The protest will be higlighting several issues, including low rates paid to raw cotton, paddy and soyabean growers, FDI in retail, inflation, corruption, rising electricity bills and rationing of subsidised LPG cylinders.u00a0

"Party workers from all the five constituencies in the city are going to Nagpur and have been joined by party workers from Ahmednagar," Shripad Dhekane, treasurer of BJP's city unit, said.

He said the meeting of the senior party leaders would be held at 11 am today to plan the protest, following which party workers from across the state would come and gherao the assembly.

Party sources said the plan was to block all entry points to the assembly.

"The protest will be held for around three hours, during which issues like corruption, government's apathy towards farmers suicides, false assurances regarding zero load-shedding and FDI in retail will be raised," Dhekane said.

Besides, the party workers would be appealing to Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan to set up a special investigation force to check the recent irrigation scam.

While the protest would be held only today, the party representatives in the opposition would be keeping the heat on the state government throughout the winter session on the issue of inflation and corruption.u00a0
