Four drown in visarjan tragedy in Katraj

Ganpati visarjan turned into a tragic incident for a family yesterday, as three of the its members and a family friend, drowned in the very pond they were visiting for the immersion ritual in Katraj, Pune


Ganpati visarjan turned into a tragic incident for a family yesterday, as three of the its members and a family friend, drowned in the very pond they were visiting for the immersion ritual.

The incident occurred at 6.30 pm, at Mangewadi in Sundar Nagar, Katraj. The deceased hailed from the same locality and were identified as Suma Survase (32), Govind Survase (10), Venkatesh Survase (13), and the family friend, Anita Chavan (30).

Eyewitnesses said that the children went deep into the pond and then began shouting for help, at which point, Suma and Anita entered the pond to rescue them.

The fire brigade received a call around 7.18 pm, but by the time they reached the spot, the victims had drowned.

"As soon as we received the call we rushed to the spot and recovered the bodies out in about an hour. All the four were dead.

Perhaps if we would have reached earlier, we could have saved their lives," said Sanjay Ramteke, one of the firemen.
