A 20-year-old driver lost his life after his truck hit the wall of a bridge on the old Mumbai-Pune highway on Wednesday at around 7 am.

The accident took place at Adoshi village near Khopoli where the driver identified as Dattatray Kengre, lost his control of his vehicle and hit the wall.

A 25-year-old cleaner, who was sitting beside the driver, sustained minor injuries.

According to police, the truck was carrying a huge consignment of sugar from Pune to Vashi. "The driver's cabin was smashed. He was buried under the huge bags of sugar and died on the spot," a police officer from the Khopoli police station told Hindustan Times.

"The cleaner had been sleeping in the cabin when the accident took place. He managed to get out before the bags fell on him. We think the truck's brakes failed, leading to the accident," the officer added.

The victim's body has been sent to a civic hospital, where a post-mortem will be conducted.
