BARC employee suicide: Deceased wanted to quit job to pursue PhD

Bhabha Atomic Research Centre scientific officer Amit Kumar Singh (29), who was found hanging from a staircase on the terrace of his building near Amar Cinema in Chembur on Thursday morning, was ostensibly in depression


The deceased, who allegedly took his own life, is the fourth BARC employee to have either committed suicide or died in an accident over the past year. Amit had rented flat no A-11, Ameya CHS Ltd, along with two bachelor friends.

Neighbour Mohneesh Bhatia said Singh was a simple guy, who wanted to do a PhD by quitting his job. The deceased was a native of Bihar and his parents wanted him to continue with his career, as they had to sell their farmland to fund his education. He was earning Rs 60,000 a month. The deceased also had the responsibility of arranging and financing the marriage of his sister. His brother Ankit Kumar stays in Assam.u00a0"He seemed depressed because his sister's marriage was getting delayed further. His inability to pursue his education accentuated his despair," a police source said.

The neighbour had come to the terrace to walk his dogs when he found Amit's body suspended from a water tank staircase with a nylon rope used for drying clothes. Mohneesh informed the police control room and the deceased's roommates. Pradeep N Patil, inspector (admin) from Govandi police station, said that Singh made his final phone call to a friend in Colaba. "This friend told us that Amit sounded sad during the conversation." Patil added that a case of suicide has been registered at Govandi police station. "After the post-mortem the body will be sent to his family in Bihar."
