The cyber wing of Kerala Police has registered a case against social media platform X Corp and a user account for allegedly circulating an artificial intelligence-generated video portraying Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Election Commission of India in a misleading and defamatory manner, reported news agency PTI.

The action follows a complaint received through official channels, including inputs from the poll body, prompting authorities to initiate legal proceedings.

AI Video Flagged for Misleading and Defamatory Content

According to the police statement, the video in question was found to have the potential to mislead the public and damage the credibility of key constitutional institutions. Authorities noted that such content could also adversely affect the conduct of free and fair elections, reported PTI.

After preliminary verification, officials concluded that the material warranted immediate legal intervention due to its possible impact on public perception and electoral integrity.

Case Filed Against X and User Account

The First Information Report (FIR) was registered at the Cyber Crime Police Station in Thiruvananthapuram City late Wednesday night. The case names a specific social media handle, along with other unidentified individuals and the platform itself, as accused parties, reported PTI.

Police confirmed that an investigation has been launched to determine responsibility and take action in accordance with the law.

Charges Under Multiple Legal Provisions

The FIR invokes several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including provisions related to intentional insult, forgery, and statements that could incite public mischief. Additionally, charges under the Information Technology Act, particularly those concerning identity theft, have also been applied, reported PTI.

Authorities stated that the video, approximately one minute and 17 seconds long, was allegedly shared with the intent to create unrest and disturb public order.

Notice Issued for Content Removal

Officials said legal notices have been served to the intermediary platform under relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act and associated rules, directing the prompt removal of the disputed content, reported PTI.

Police further alleged that despite being notified, the platform allowed the video to continue circulating, which contributed to the decision to initiate legal action.

Public Advisory Amid Election Period

In light of the ongoing election environment, the Cyber Operations Wing has taken steps to curb the spread of the video and prevent further dissemination of potentially harmful content.

Kerala Police has urged citizens to exercise caution and avoid sharing unverified or misleading information, especially during sensitive periods such as elections.

Reiterating its commitment to maintaining electoral integrity, authorities stated that strict, lawful, and impartial action will be taken against any attempts to disrupt or influence the democratic process.
