YouTuber Dhruv Rathee was detained by Delhi Police at his Gurugram residence on Saturday ahead of the Cockroach Janta Party's (CJP) proposed protest at Jantar Mantar, police sources said.
Rathee was on his way to join the CJP protest in Delhi, which has prompted heightened security arrangements across the national capital, PTI reported.
Earlier this week, Delhi Police denied permission for the protest, citing security considerations and procedural requirements.
The police have stepped up preventive detentions and deployed personnel at strategic locations to prevent protesters from reaching the protest site.
So far, the police have detained around 200 protesters from various locations in the New Delhi area.
Meanwhile, Delhi Police Special Cell also detained CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke inside an aircraft after it landed at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) in Delhi on Saturday, following his arrival from Maharashtra.
"I have come here to be arrested; arrest me," Dipke told the police personnel after they entered the aircraft.
"No, this is not an arrest. Please cooperate," the police personnel responded.
The development comes amid heightened security in the national capital ahead of the CJP protest. Dipke's detention at the airport comes as authorities step up security measures surrounding the planned demonstration.
Security checks were intensified at the Singhu Border, on the Delhi-Haryana border, on Saturday ahead of the CJP protest in Delhi, ANI reported.
Police also conducted intensive vehicle checks at the Tulsi Niketan border in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, leading to heavy traffic congestion in the area.
Meanwhile, Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel carried out a flag march from Mandi House Circle.
Security was also tightened at Terminal 3 of the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport ahead of CJP activist Abhijeet Dipke's arrival for the Jantar Mantar 2.0 protest, ANI reported.
Earlier in the day, Delhi Police conducted flag marches across the Connaught Place area and detained several demonstrators near Janpath.
The national capital was placed under heightened security ahead of the CJP protest demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.
More than 35,000 Delhi Police and paramilitary personnel were mobilised across the capital following directives from the Union Home Ministry.
After denying permission for the gathering, citing previous instances of violence, Delhi Police directed teams on the ground to detain anyone attempting to demonstrate. Six stadiums and community centres, including Chhatrasal Stadium and Rajiv Gandhi Stadium, were designated as temporary holding facilities.
Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel were instructed not to carry firearms, while police teams were equipped with batons and directed to avoid verbal confrontations.
To ensure transparency and prevent confrontations, on-duty Delhi Police personnel were equipped with uniform-mounted body cameras capable of recording footage in low-light conditions.
"These body cams are to protect us and others. In situations of manhandling, allegations are levelled against Delhi Police. So, these body cams will prove whether we did anything to anyone or not. This will record everything," an on-duty police official said earlier, ANI reported.
