Cops had sent a sample of the meat to a Mathura laboratory for forensic tests to check whether it was beef. While eating beef in the area where Dadri is located is not prohibited, cow slaughter is banned.

Last September, Moham-mad Akhlaq was killed by a mob of at least 100 over rumours that he had stored beef at his residence. After the initial tests from a local lab, the police had then said the meat they recovered from Akhlaq's home was mutton.
