At least four people were killed and over a dozen sustained serious burn injuries on Saturday in a hotel blaze in the winter capital Jammu in Jammu and Kashmir 


Jammu: At least four people died and over a dozen sustained serious burn injuries on Saturday in a hotel blaze in winter capital Jammu.

Police said four people died in the fire that occurred in Hotel Neelam near the main bus stand in Jammu city, a kilometre from the city centre Shaheedi Chowk, early morning.

"The fire started after midnight. Immediately after smoke started billowing out of the hotel building fire tenders and rescue personnel reached the spot.

"Out of the injured persons, four succumbed to critical burn injuries and smoke poisoning. Twelve injured persons are being treated at the Jammu Medical College Hospital", a senior police officer told IANS here.

Witnesses said fire started from a store room in the ground floor of the hotel where vehicle tyres had been stored. Reports also said the owner of the hotel is also a local transporter.

Senior district and provincial administration officials rushed to the spot to supervise rescue and relief operation as nearly a dozen fire tenders were batting to bring the blaze under control.

Omar orders inquiry into Jammu hotel fire

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today ordered an inquiry into the fire incident in a Jammu hotel that left four persons dead and several injured. "Deputy Commissioner Jammu has been ordered to enquire into the circumstances that caused the fire and to ascertain responsibility, if any, for the same," Omar wrote on microblogging site Twitter.

At least four persons were killed and over a dozen suffered burn injuries in a fire in a hotel in Jammu in the wee hours of the day. "My condolences to the families of those killed in the hotel fire in Jammu today and prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured," Omar added.
