Petrol and diesel prices were increased by Rs 3 per litre across India on Friday after state-run oil marketing companies revised retail fuel rates amid rising global crude oil prices and growing concerns over energy security due to the continuing conflict in West Asia.
The latest hike has added to inflation concerns for households, transport operators and businesses already dealing with rising input costs.
In New Delhi, petrol prices increased from Rs 94.77 per litre to Rs 97.77 per litre, while diesel prices rose from Rs 87.67 per litre to Rs 90.67 per litre.
The increase comes as global crude oil prices continue to remain elevated amid fears of supply disruptions in the Middle East, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's key oil transit routes.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently urged citizens to conserve fuel, avoid unnecessary consumption and reduce wastage. He also advised people to postpone non-essential gold purchases and reduce edible oil consumption, remarks that have triggered speculation about possible demand-control measures if the global crisis intensifies further.
Following the latest revision, petrol prices in Kolkata increased to Rs 108.74 per litre after a hike of Rs 3.29, while Mumbai recorded petrol prices at Rs 106.64 per litre following an increase of Rs 3.10. In Chennai, petrol prices rose to Rs 103.90 per litre, while Bengaluru saw rates climb to Rs 106.17 per litre.
Hyderabad continued to record among the highest petrol prices in the country at Rs 110.89 per litre after a hike of Rs 3.39. Jaipur registered petrol prices of Rs 108.19 per litre, while Patna recorded Rs 108.55 per litre. In Thiruvananthapuram, petrol prices reached Rs 110.75 per litre after a rise of Rs 3.37.
Other major cities also witnessed sharp increases. Petrol prices in Gurgaon rose to Rs 98.29 per litre, Lucknow recorded Rs 97.58 per litre, Noida stood at Rs 90.04 per litre and Chandigarh reported Rs 97.27 per litre. Bhubaneswar witnessed one of the steepest hikes, with petrol prices increasing by Rs 3.60 to reach Rs 104.57 per litre.
Diesel prices also recorded significant increases across major cities. In Mumbai, diesel prices rose to Rs 93.14 per litre, while Kolkata recorded Rs 95.13 per litre. Chennai saw diesel rates rise to Rs 95.47 per litre and Bengaluru recorded diesel prices of Rs 94.10 per litre.
In Hyderabad, diesel prices climbed to Rs 98.96 per litre after a hike of Rs 3.26, while Thiruvananthapuram recorded Rs 99.63 per litre. Jaipur saw diesel prices rise to Rs 93.43 per litre, while Patna recorded Rs 94.63 per litre.
In northern cities, Gurgaon reported diesel prices at Rs 90.77 per litre, Lucknow at Rs 90.87 per litre and Noida at Rs 91.31 per litre. Chandigarh continued to have relatively lower diesel prices at Rs 85.25 per litre despite the latest increase. Bhubaneswar again saw one of the sharpest hikes, with diesel prices rising by Rs 3.56 to Rs 96.11 per litre.
Apart from petrol and diesel, compressed natural gas (CNG) prices have also been increased in several cities.
In Delhi, CNG prices were raised by Rs 2 per kilogram, taking the retail rate from Rs 77.09 per kg to Rs 79.09 per kg.
In Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, CNG prices were also increased by Rs 2 per kg, with the new retail price now standing at Rs 84 per kg.
