Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi extended his Independence Day greetings to citizens on Saturday, saying that freedom should not be viewed merely as a gift received from the country's freedom fighters.
In his message, Gandhi described freedom as a responsibility that citizens must continue to uphold through their actions and commitment to democratic values.
India is celebrating its 80th Independence Day on Saturday, with celebrations being held across the country.
In a post on X, Gandhi said freedom carries an important responsibility for every citizen.
He called on people to remain committed to the principles of truth and non-violence, while also keeping the values represented by the Constitution and the national Tricolour close to their hearts.
Gandhi also stressed the need to protect democracy under all circumstances.
His message linked the significance of Independence Day with the responsibility of citizens to preserve the ideals associated with India's freedom struggle and the Constitution.
The Congress leader emphasised the importance of safeguarding constitutional values as part of the responsibility that comes with freedom.
He said citizens must continue to uphold the principles that form the foundation of India's democratic system and ensure that these values remain protected.
Gandhi's remarks came as the country marked another Independence Day, commemorating India's independence and remembering the contributions of those who fought for freedom.
The Leader of Opposition also expressed pride in citizens, particularly young people, whom he said were united in protecting these values.
His reference to the youth came in the context of his broader appeal for citizens to remain committed to democracy, constitutional principles and the ideals of the freedom movement.
The Congress leader's Independence Day message therefore centred on the idea that the meaning of freedom extends beyond independence from colonial rule and includes the continuing responsibility of citizens to protect democratic institutions and constitutional values.
As India celebrates its 80th Independence Day, Gandhi urged citizens to carry forward the principles of truth, non-violence and democracy while keeping the Constitution and the Tricolour at the heart of their national identity.
