Two mild tremors struck parts of Maharashtra's Hingoli district within a span of a few hours on Saturday morning, triggering panic among residents, though no casualties or property damage were reported, officials said.
The first tremor, measuring 3.3 magnitude, was recorded at around 7.46 am, according to the district disaster management cell. Its epicentre was located at a depth of 7 km in Gadhala village of Aundha Nagnath tehsil.
The tremor was accompanied by a rumbling sound that was heard in parts of the area. Residents were briefly alarmed by the seismic activity, but there were no reports of injuries or damage to buildings following the first jolt.
Around two hours after the first tremor, a stronger jolt measuring 4.5 magnitude was experienced across multiple parts of Hingoli district, officials said.
Villagers from Pimpaldari and neighbouring areas in Aundha Nagnath tehsil said they heard a rumbling sound that continued for a few minutes before the second tremor struck.
The back-to-back tremors caused concern among residents in the affected areas. However, the administration said there were no reports of casualties or property damage following either of the seismic events.
Officials have asked residents not to panic and advised people to remain alert in view of the tremors.
The latest incidents come against the backdrop of recurring seismic activity in parts of Hingoli district over the past six years.
Earlier on October 1, residents of the adjoining Pangra Shinde village had also experienced a similar rumbling sound, according to officials.
The region witnessed stronger tremors earlier this year as well. On July 9, a tremor measuring 4.6 magnitude was recorded, followed by another measuring 3.5 magnitude on July 11. The tremors reportedly caused cracks in some houses in the area.
The latest seismic activity has again raised concerns among villagers, particularly those in areas that have experienced tremors at regular intervals in recent years.
The district administration, however, has urged residents to remain calm and stay alert. Officials are monitoring the situation following Saturday morning's tremors.
The first tremor was recorded at 7.46 am, while the stronger 4.5-magnitude jolt followed approximately two hours later. Despite the intensity of the second tremor, there were no immediate reports of casualties or property damage from the affected areas.
