The Maharashtra government has reconstituted its inspection and monitoring committee to strengthen enforcement of the PCPNDT Act and crack down on illegal sex determination and related violations, officials said.
As per the news agency, the move aims to improve oversight of diagnostic centres and ensure stricter action against those violating laws meant to prevent female foeticide.
The new 18-member committee has been formed for a three-year term and will be headed by the state's Minister for Public Health and Family Welfare. The Minister of State for the department will serve as vice-chairperson.
The Maharashtra State Commission for Women chairperson is also part of the panel, as reported by the news agency.
Several women legislators, including Sneha Dubey-Pandit, Shweta Mahale, Pradnya Satav and Bhavana Gawali, have been included as members, according to a government resolution issued on May 4.
Senior officials from the health and medical education departments, along with doctors, are also part of the committee.
Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act is an Indian legislation enacted to ban sex selection before or after conception. It regulates ultrasound and genetic counselling centres to prevent misuse of sex determination tests to majorly prevent female foeticide.
The committee will oversee implementation of the above act, while also inspecting registered sonography centres and coordinating with agencies to ensure compliance with the laws.
As per PTI reports, officials said the panel will monitor violations and take steps to ensure stricter enforcement across the state.
The committee has also been given authority to recommend sealing of sonography machines and initiate action against centres found violating rules during inspections. A senior official said the aim is to improve monitoring and reduce illegal practices linked to sex selection.
Vasai MLA Sneha Dubey-Pandit said the move will help ensure stricter enforcement of existing laws and is an important step for the safety of girls and to maintain gender balance in society. She added, "through this committee, strict implementation of the law will be ensured and action will be taken against the guilty, while public awareness will also be given priority," reported the news agency.
Officials added that awareness campaigns will also be part of the broader effort to improve compliance and promote gender equality.
