New Delhi: Taking responsibility for Congress' rout in Maharashtra assembly election, former Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan today said the party's performance was "disappointing" though it did recover some ground since Lok Sabha polls.

"The performance of Congress party has been disappointing .... Since I led the party in the polls, I take full responsibility for the disappointing performance of Congress in Maharashtra," Chavan, who was chief minister for nearly four years till the NCP withdrew support to his government last month, told reporters.

He said that the party has recovered some of the lost ground after its poor performance in the Lok Sabha polls, but could not do so as per expectations. "There has been improvement in the situation after the Lok Sabha polls but it has not been as per expectations," he said, adding that the party will introspect and go into the causes of the defeat.

Congress was in power in the state in coalition with the NCP for 15 years. However, it won just two out of 48 seats in the state in the recent Lok Sabha election. "Congress would perform the task of a constructive opposition in the new House and we will try to strengthen our organisation," he added.
