Three members of a family, including two young girls, lost their lives after a rain-triggered landslide destroyed their house in Mangaluru early on Wednesday, news agency PTI reported. Three other family members were rescued from the debris and are undergoing treatment in hospital.
The incident took place behind the Kankanady Police Station in the Nagori area after heavy overnight rainfall caused a section of a nearby hill to collapse, burying the house under a large mound of soil.
The six members were trapped when the house collapsed. Local residents were the first to rush to the spot, followed by personnel from the fire and emergency services and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), who carried out rescue operations.
The victims who died in the incident have been identified as Shanta (46), her eight-year-old daughter Anamika, and four-year-old daughter Pari. The survivors have been identified as Balkrishna (48), Alka (14), and Anusha (11).
The family, originally from Bihar, had been living in the Kankanady area for around 20 years.
Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Darshan visited the site to review the rescue efforts and assess the situation.
The district administration has begun a study of the surrounding area to determine if it is safe for residents. Officials have also appealed to people living in landslide-prone and hilly areas to remain alert and take necessary precautions as heavy rain continues to lash the coastal district.
Karnataka Health Minister UT Khadar, who visited both the landslide site and the injured survivors in hospital, described the incident as a warning for the entire coastal region.
He said emergency responders, police, and local residents acted quickly after the landslide. He also assured that the injured would receive free medical treatment and said compensation would be provided to the family, even though they were originally from another state.
The minister said authorities have already identified landslide-prone locations across the district and urged residents living in high-risk areas to move to safer places voluntarily.
He added that people staying on government land in dangerous locations should contact authorities for relocation assistance. Financial aid will also be provided to repair the damaged house so the displaced family can return after restoration.
Khadar further appealed to residents to immediately report warning signs such as cracks in the ground or soil movement. He also warned that private property owners could be held responsible if negligence on their part leads to loss of life or hardship for residents.
