Pune Police in Maharashtra on Wednesday made the first arrest in the Mundhwa land deal case involving the alleged illegal sale of government land to a company linked to Parth Pawar, son of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Ajit Pawar, reported the PTI.
The arrested accused has been identified as Shital Tejwani.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Economic Offences Wing), Vivek Masal, told reporters that Shital Tejwani was arrested in connection with an FIR registered at Khadak Police Station. The FIR also names Digvijay Patil, partner at Amadea Enterprises LLP, and suspended tehsildar Suryakant Yeole as co-accused, as per the PTI.
According to the police, Tejwani allegedly entered into an illegal sale deed with Amadea Enterprises LLP while acting as the Power of Attorney holder for a 40-acre plot of government land currently leased to the Botanical Survey of India.
DCP Masal said Tejwani had been called for questioning earlier, and after gathering sufficient evidence, the police decided to arrest her.
He added that the investigation will continue based on the statements collected and new names emerging during questioning. When asked about the possibility of arresting Digvijay Patil, who is Parth Pawar's cousin and business partner, Masal said the probe would proceed as required, according to the PTI.
Tejwani is accused of striking a Rs 300 crore land deal with Amadea Enterprises LLP on behalf of 272 supposed former owners, despite the land being government property.
She will be produced before a court on Thursday, an official said on Wednesday.
Suspended tehsildar Suryakant Yeole is accused of abusing his position by issuing eviction notices to the Botanical Survey of India. The accused persons face charges of cheating, criminal breach of trust, and other relevant offences. Police had earlier clarified that Parth Pawar has not been named as an accused, as his name does not appear in the sale deed, the news agency reported.
After controversy erupted over the purchase of government land by a company where Parth is a partner, not only was the deal cancelled and the firm was asked to pay the stamp duty.
