NDA sweeps Bihar elections 2025, Opposition sinks

National Democratic Alliance secures three-fourth majority, bagging 183 seats; BJP emerges as single largest party, winning 83 seats

The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Friday secured a three-fourth majority in the Bihar Assembly, winning 183 seats in the 243-member House, as per the Election Commission website. The BJP emerged as the largest party, winning 83 seats and leading in six other constituencies.

Its ally, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar-led JD(U), won 75 seats and was ahead in 10, while Union minister Chirag Paswan-led Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) bagged 17 and was ahead in two other seats.

Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular), headed by former chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, won five seats, while Upendra Kushwaha-led Rashtriya Lok Morcha won three seats and was leading in one.

Deputy Chief Ministers Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha, and state ministers Prem Kumar, Maheshwar Hazari and Sanjay Saraogi and BJP's Maithili Thakur were among prominent winners from the NDA camp.

RJD leader and INDIA bloc's CM face Tejashwi Yadav, the late Mohammad Shahabuddin's son Osama Shahab and CPI(ML) Liberation's Sandeep Saurav were among prominent winners from the opposition camp.

The INDIA bloc managed to win only 32 seats by press time. The RJD bagged 23 seats and was leading in two other constituencies, while the Congress won six seats, the CPI(ML) Liberation two seats and the CPI(M) one.

The BJP and the JD(U) contested 101 seats each, while their ally LJP (RV) put up candidates in 28 constituencies. In the INDIA bloc, the RJD fought in 141 seats, while the Congress contested 61 constituencies and the CPI(ML) Liberation 20.


Maithili Thakur (Youngest MLA)

Another notable winner was Raju Tiwari, the state president of Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas). Tiwari had wrested the Govindganj seat by defeating nearest Congress rival Shashi Bhushan Rai by an astounding margin of more than 32,000 votes. Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM won five seats.

Debacle for Jan Suraaj

Former poll strategist Prashant Kishor's Jan Suraaj Party, dubbed the ‘X factor', failed to open its account. The party's best performance came from Naveen Kumar Singh alias Abhay Singh, who secured the second spot from the Marhaura constituency. He was behind Jitendra Kumar Rai of the RJD by a margin of 27,928 votes.

A high turnout of women, who outnumbered male voters by nearly 10 percentage points, seems to have clinched the deal in favour of the BJP-led coalition, as various studies have suggested that females, especially in Bihar, are more inclined towards the NDA.

Major winners and losers

BJP

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary won Tarapur seat by a margin of 45,843 seats, defeating RJD's Arun Kumar. Choudhary polled 1,22,480 votes.

Deputy CM Vijay Sinha won the Lakhisarai seat by a margin of 24,940 votes, defeating Congress's Amaresh Kumar. Sinha polled 1,22,408 votes.

Maithili Thakur, first-time entrant, won Alinagar seat by a margin of 11,730 votes, defeating RJD's Binod Mishra. Thakur polled 84,915 votes.

Nitish Mishra won Jhanjharpur seat by a margin of 54,849 votes, defeating CPI's Ram Narayan Yadav. Mishra polled 1,07,958 votes. Mangal Pandey, first-time entrant, won Siwan seat by a margin of 9370 votes, defeating RJD's sitting MLA Awadh Bihari Choudhary. Pandey polled 92,379 votes.

Shreyashi Singh won from Jamui seat by a margin of 54,498 votes, defeating RJD's Mohammand Shamshad Alam. She polled 1,23,868 votes. Nitin Nabin won Bankipur seat by a margin of 51,936 votes, defeating RJD's Rekha Kumar.

JDU

Vijay Kumar Choudhary won Sarairanjan seat by a margin of 20,798 votes, defeating RJD's Arbind Kumar Sahni. He polled 1,02,792 votes. Shrawon Kumar won Nalanda seat by a margin of 33,008 votes, defeating Congress's Kaushalendra Kumar. He polled 1,05,432 votes.

Sunil Kumar won from Bhorey seat, defeating CPI-ML (Liberation) Dhananjay by 16,163 votes. He polled 1,01,469 votes. Sheela Kumari won Phulparas seat by 14,099 votes, defeating Congress's Subodh Mandal. She polled 93,677 votes. Aniruddha Prasad Yadav won Nirmali seat by a margin of 37,310 votes, defeating RJD's Baidyanath Mehta. He polled 1,18,904 votes.

Maheshwar Hazari won Kalyanpur seat, defeating CPI (ML) L's Ranjeet Kumar Ram by 38,586 votes. Hazari polled 1,18,162 votes. Jailed JD(U) leader Anant Singh secured a victory from Mokama Assembly constituency winning by a margin of 28,206 votes. The jailed MLA secured 91,416 votes against the RJD candidate, Veena Devi, who got 63,210 votes.

RJD

RJD leader INDIA bloc candidate Tejashwi Yadav, the late Mohammad Shahabuddin's son Osama Shahab and CPI(ML) Liberation's Sandeep Saurav were among those winning from the opposition camp. Yadav won from Raghopur seat by a margin of 14,532 votes, defeating BJP's Satish Kumar. Yadav polled 1,18,597 votes.

Awadh Bihari Chaudhary lost Siwan seat by a margin of 9,370 votes. He polled 83,009 votes. Osama Shahab, first-time entrant, won Raghunathpur seat by a margin of 9248 votes. Alok Kumar Mehta won Ujiarpur seat by a margin of 16,283 votes.

Nitish thanks people

Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) Presdient Nitish Kumar on Friday thanked people of the state for giving a "landslide" victory for the ruling NDA. "People of the state have expressed their confidence in our government by giving us a landslide mandate in the polls. For this, I bow to all the esteemed voters of the state, and express my heartfelt gratitude and thanks," he said. "For this, thanks and gratitude are also due to all the partners of the NDA alliance."

Like a tsunami: Nadda

BJP President JP Nadda on Friday said the people gave a massive mandate like a "tsunami" to the NDA in the Bihar polls for good governance and development in the state, putting a "no entry" board for the ‘jungle raj' that the state witnessed during the RJD rule in the past. "It is a massive mandate and the poll results show it's a tsunami."

‘Victory of Biharis'

Terming the poll results a "victory of every Bihari", Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday said the overwhelming mandate for the NDA is people's stamp of approval on its work for development, women's safety and the welfare of the poor. Shah said the people of Bihar have conveyed the mood of the entire nation that the purification of voter lists is essential.

NDA destroyed jungle raj: Modi

PM Modi said the victory has given a new ‘MY - Mahila and Youth' formula with the people destroying the "communal MY formula of the jungle raj people". Modi said Bihar is the land which gave India the pride of being the mother of democracy, and the same land has ensured that the people attacking democracy "bite the dust". "Bihar has shown again that lies are defeated and people's trust wins," he said.
