The Centre on Tuesday cancelled the NEET-UG 2026 examination conducted on May 3, with the decision reaffirmed on May 12 amid allegations of a paper leak and other examination irregularities, ANI reported.
The country's largest undergraduate medical entrance examination will now be re-conducted, with fresh dates to be announced separately by the authorities.
The Government has also referred the matter to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a comprehensive probe into the alleged irregularities surrounding the examination.
In a statement, the National Testing Agency (NTA) said the decision was taken after examining inputs in coordination with central agencies. Findings shared by law enforcement agencies raised concerns over the integrity of the examination process.
"The present examination process could not be allowed to stand," the agency stated.
The NTA said the decision was taken with the approval of the Government of India to ensure transparency in the system and maintain trust in the examination process.
It added that the alternative would have caused greater and more lasting damage to the credibility of the exam system.
The agency clarified that students will not need to register again for the re-examination. Registration details, candidature information, and selected exam centres will remain valid.
Candidates will also not be charged any additional fee, and refunds will be processed for fees already paid.
The NTA said fresh examination dates and revised admit card schedules will be announced in the coming days through official channels.
It also confirmed that the re-exam will be conducted using its internal resources.
NEET-UG is the single national-level entrance examination for admission to MBBS, BDS, and other undergraduate medical courses in India.
The May 3, 2026, exam was conducted in pen-and-paper mode across over 5,400 centres in 551 cities in India and 14 cities abroad, with around 22.79 lakh students appearing.
