Nepal Gen Z protest: Air India cancels Kathmandu flights, IndiGo issues advisory for passengers

Air India on Tuesday cancelled its flights between the New Delhi and Kathmandu in view of the closure of the city's airport amid anti-government protests in Nepal and IndiGo issued an advisory for passengers.

Nepal is facing massive Gen Z protests and Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu has been temporarily closed.

Following the unrest in the country Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday.

So far 19 people have died since the beginning of the protests on Monday.

In an official statement, the an Air India Spokesperson said, "In view of the current situation prevailing in Kathmandu, the following flights AI2231/2232, AI2219/2220, AI217/218 and AI211/212 operating on the Delhi-Kathmandu-Delhi route have been cancelled today. We are closely monitoring the situation and will share further updates. At Air India, the safety of our passengers and crew remain top priority."

In an advisory, IndiGo said, "In view of the prevailing situation in Kathmandu, the airport has been closed for operations. Consequently, all flights to and from Kathmandu stand suspended as of now. If your travel is impacted, you may conveniently opt for an alternate flight or claim a refund by visiting our website. We are closely monitoring the developments and coordinating with local authorities to resume operations at the earliest. Customers are advised to keep checking our official channels for the latest advisories and updates. We look forward to the restoration of normal operations and sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding."

Earlier on Monday, Nepal's Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak stepped down from the post following deadly protests in two decades.

As per sources, Lekhak submitted his resignation to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli during the emergency cabinet meeting held at the official residence on Monday evening.

Demonstrators gathered near Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli's private residence in Balkot, demanding accountability for Monday's fatalities. During the protest, demonstrators set fire to the residence, according to the Himalayan Times.

The central office of the Nepali Congress in Sanepa was vandalised on Tuesday afternoon, The Himalayan Times reported.

Protesters have also vandalised the homes of Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba in Budhanilkantha

Protesters have attacked political party office of the CPN-UML in Chyasal, Lalitpur.

Protesters broke windows, threw stones, and set fire to the building, as part of demonstrations against corruption following the death of 19 protesters on Monday.

According to reports, police deployed tear gas to disperse the crowd. Although authorities stated that security forces had been instructed to exercise restraint and that no live ammunition was authorised, there were reports of gunfire and bullet injuries, as per The Himalayan Times.

The Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) has been fully closed following escalating demonstrations.

The Nepali Army has been deployed to provide security at the airport, the ANI reported.
