A delegation of Janawadi Mahila Sanghatana, an NGO, met Rajesh Chavan, the Commissioner of Women and Child Development Department (WCD), yesterday afternoon to discuss the rape and impregnation of 13-year-old inmate of Vidyavati Ashram.

Kiran Moghe, state president of the NGO, presented a memorandum to Chavan raising concerns about the suspected practice of child trafficking or child prostitution in the Ashram, considering that the orphange was operational without the necessary licence.

Kiran Moghe told MiD DAY: "We have demanded that the inquiry committee report dealing with this issue be made open. If the Ashram's licence had expired in March 2008, why did the WCD authorities continue to visit the place? We have also learnt that some officers have signed the registers in 2009. This very fact has led to the suspicion whether there was a nexus between the WCD officials and the Ashram authorities."

Moghe also demanded that the 13-year-old undergo a DNA test to ascertain whether she was raped by the 13-year-old inmate of the ashram. Recently, Shiv Sena state spokesperson Neelam Gore demanded a CID probe into the case.u00a0
