Nine killed in bid to loot overturned truck

Nine villagers including a woman were killed today when a overturned truck fell on them while they were allegedly trying to loot goods on the vehicle in Chhattisgarh's Durg district, police said


The incident took place near Urla village on Durg-Rajnandgaon bypass road, Durg City Superintendent of Police Santosh Singh told PTI.

According to the officer, the cloth-laden truck overturned last night near Urla village leaving its driver injured following which he was admitted to a local hospital while the ill fated truck was left at the spot.

This morning, over a hundred villagers reached the spot and climbed the overturned truck to allegedly steal the clothes. Meanwhile, the vehicle lost balance and fell on the villagers leaving nine dead and three others injured, he said.

Soon after the incident, a police team was rushed to the spot. The trapped villagers were rescued and were admitted to a local hospital where nine of them were declared brought dead, he said.

The deceased have not been identified yet. The injured were treated and stated to be out of danger, he added.

Chief Minister Raman Singh has announced compensation of Rs 50,000 each to the kin of the deceased while Rs 15,000 each to the injured victims.u00a0
