Four cheetahs from South Africa arrived in Bengaluru early Saturday, marking a fresh push for wildlife conservation in Karnataka. The animals landed at Kempegowda International Airport shortly after midnight and were received by Forest, Ecology, and Environment Minister Eshwar B Khandre.
Officials said the transfer was carried out under strict supervision, with veterinary teams ensuring the animals' safety during transit. The cheetahs have been moved to Bannerghatta Biological Park, where they will undergo a mandatory 30-day quarantine. During this period, experts will monitor their health, diet, and adaptation to local climatic conditions. Authorities have prioritised preventing infections and minimising stress as the animals acclimatise to their new environment.
Cheetahs, once native to Karnataka and locally known as "Sivangi", had disappeared from the region decades ago. Their reintroduction is expected to boost conservation awareness and offer visitors an opportunity to observe the species up close. Officials said the animals will be introduced to their post quarantine, subject to veterinary clearance and established safety protocols.
