The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is investigating an Air India flight from Phuket to Delhi after the aircraft experienced a sudden loss of altitude of approximately 300 feet during cruise on August 4. The aircraft subsequently stabilised and landed safely in Delhi.
"The occurrence has been classified as a Serious Incident and is under investigation by the AAIB," the Ministry of Civil Aviation said in a statement on Sunday, ANI reported.
Both pilots have been taken off the roster and removed from flying duties pending the investigation.
The ministry said the screening test of the Pilot-in-Command (PIC) indicated a result that requires confirmatory testing.
As part of the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) followed after such occurrences, both flight crew members underwent the prescribed psychoactive substance screening test.
The PIC's screening sample showed a result requiring further confirmation. The sample has been sent to a designated laboratory for confirmatory analysis, and the final report is awaited, the ministry said.
"Pending investigation and completion of the prescribed process, both flight crew members have been taken off roster by the DGCA," it added, the news agency reported.
A few passengers and cabin crew members sustained injuries during the incident, according to the ministry.

The ministry said further action would be taken based on the outcome of the AAIB investigation and the confirmatory test result.
It added that the government remains committed to maintaining high aviation safety standards and ensuring that such occurrences are thoroughly investigated, with appropriate action taken in accordance with applicable regulations and procedures.
Meanwhile, Air India on Wednesday said that all 13 passengers who were admitted to hospital after the incident involving flight AI2379 from Phuket to Delhi were discharged.
In an update issued at 3.30 pm on Wednesday, the airline said four crew members remain in hospital and continue to receive medical treatment.
Following the incident, 13 passengers and four crew members were taken to hospital for treatment.
Air India said all injured passengers have since been discharged, while the four crew members remain under medical supervision.
