Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday announced the launch of a nationwide "GST Utsav" beginning on the first day of Navratri, describing it as a festival of savings for the people of India.

In a national address, the Prime Minister said that from September 22, citizens would be able to purchase their favourite items at reduced prices as the new GST rates come into effect.

"Next-generation GST reforms are being implemented from tomorrow. It's like a GST saving festival," PM Modi said.

He added, "From tomorrow, you will be able to buy your favourite items with ease. This is like a GST saving festival for every Indian."

The Prime Minister highlighted that the poor and the emerging middle class are receiving double the benefits following the latest GST rate reductions.

Extending Navratri greetings, PM Modi said this new phase of GST reforms will directly benefit the common man, farmers, MSMEs, middle-class families, women, and youth.

"Mantra of Swadeshi gave strength to freedom movement, Swadeshi will also strength our quest for prosperity," PM Modi said in his address to nation.

The government had previously announced the GST rate cuts on 4 September, covering a wide array of products -- ranging from automobiles to everyday consumer goods.

This marks the most significant reform in the indirect tax system since the Goods and Services Tax (GST) was first introduced in July 2017.

Often referred to as "GST 2.0", the new structure introduces two main tax slabs - 5 per cent and 18 per cent, with an additional 40 per cent rate applied only to super luxury items, sin goods, and demerit goods.

These reforms were approved during the 56th meeting of the GST Council, where both Union and state governments reached a consensus.

Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister's Office announced on social media platform X that the Prime Minister would address the nation at 5 pm.

During his address, PM Modi emphasised that the new reforms symbolise the spirit of cooperative federalism between the Centre and the states.

He concluded by saying that this decision will make goods more affordable, stimulate industry, and further strengthen India's economy.
