The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has now incorporated the high-end satellite-based Global Positioning System technology (GPS) in preparing the new Development Plan (DP) for the city

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has now incorporated the high-end satellite-based Global Positioning System technology (GPS) in preparing the new Development Plan (DP) for the city.

The new DP, which will be released by the City Improvements Committee (CIC) in the next few months, will include 23 new villages that have been incorporated within the PMC limits.

A PMC official requesting anonymity said, "Every year new plots are added to the PMC limits and with the information provided by the Global Information System (GIS) through the GPS, planners will be able to implement projects faster. With information about details of the size of the plot, its previous land-use history and survey numbers, officials can easily access all the details at once."

Another official said that the technology would provide a birds eye view of the city's land, most of which is congested and quite difficult to physically survey.

"While the same information can be viewed on a regular map, it cannot accommodate detailed and varied information which the GIS can aid," the official added.

Reportedly, the DP will also display critical information from the first of its kind socio-economic survey, which is a new approach towards urban development.

The information can also be useful for independent activists, engineers, architects, town planners and social workers. Confirming the development, city engineer, Prashant Waghmare said that the DP would be approved by the end of next month.
