Two more people have been rescued from the debris of a building that collapsed at a waste management facility in Pimpri Chinchwad near Pune, taking the total number of survivors to nine, officials said on Thursday.
The three-storey building, located near a waste-to-energy plant at Moshi, collapsed on Wednesday afternoon after a large mound of garbage crashed onto the structure. Several people were trapped under the rubble following the incident.
Officials said rescue teams continued their efforts through the night to locate and safely evacuate those still trapped.
According to officials, seven people were pulled out from the debris within hours of the collapse on Wednesday.
After midnight, rescue teams managed to save two more people from the rubble. They were immediately taken to a hospital for medical treatment.
Officials said both rescued individuals are currently in stable condition.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Ganesh Ingale said a multi-agency rescue operation is still underway to save the remaining people trapped at the site.
The rescue operation is being jointly conducted by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the Indian Army, the municipal fire brigade, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority's fire brigade and police teams.
Authorities said operations are being carried out on a priority basis as teams continue searching through the debris.
Employees of Antony Lara Renewable Energy, which operates the 14MW power plant in collaboration with the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, were among those trapped when the building collapsed.
According to the Pimpri Chinchwad civic body, 23 people were initially believed to be trapped under the debris. Out of them, five managed to come out safely before rescue operations began to evacuate the remaining victims.
Officials said the building was located close to a large pile of old accumulated waste.
"The building stood next to a mountain-like pile of legacy (old) waste. Prima facie, it appears that due to heavy rains, the waste mound became loose and collapsed onto the building like a landslide," Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Commissioner Vijay Suryawanshi had said earlier.
Moshi Pradhikaran, where the incident took place, is a planned neighbourhood in Pimpri Chinchwad city near Pune.
Authorities said rescue teams are carefully removing debris to prevent further risks while searching for those still trapped.
Officials added that further investigation will determine the exact circumstances that led to the collapse.
