Pune witnessed a yellow alert amid soaring temperatures on Wednesday, even as the city recorded its season's highest temperature of 42 degrees Celsius.
Heatwave-like conditions have persisted through the week, with officials indicating that temperatures are likely to remain high for the next two days before dipping slightly by 2-3 degrees Celsius.
S D Sanap, senior scientist at the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Pune, told Mid-Day, "Throughout the week, Pune has been witnessing temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius. On Tuesday, it touched 42 degrees Celsius. Similar conditions may continue for the next couple of days, after which a slight drop is expected."
A yellow alert was issued for Pune district on Wednesday afternoon, indicating the possibility of light to moderate rainfall over the next few hours.
According to the IMD, districts including Ahilyanagar, Dharashiv, Pune and Satara are likely to witness light to moderate spells of rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning within a short duration. The alert also warns of gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph.
Citizens have been advised to remain cautious, follow safety guidelines, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
IMD officials noted that cloud cover in the late afternoon on Tuesday led to a marginal dip of around 2 degrees Celsius, offering brief relief from the intense heat.
As per IMD data, Lohegaon recorded the highest temperature in the Pune region at 42 degrees Celsius, followed by Koregaon Park at around 41 degrees Celsius.
Areas such as Pune city, Pashan, Chinchwad and Magarpatta witnessed temperatures close to 39-40°C, while relatively lower temperatures of around 37-38 degrees Celsius were recorded in NDA and Lavale.
Long-term IMD records show that Pune's all-time highest maximum temperature stands at 43.3 degrees Celsius, recorded in April 1897 and May 1889. While the current 42 degrees Celsius does not breach historical records, it remains within the upper extreme range.
Recent data suggests that instances of temperatures crossing 41-42°C have become more frequent, pointing to increasingly persistent and intense heat conditions.
According to the IMD, Pune and its surrounding areas are likely to witness partly cloudy skies turning generally cloudy by afternoon or evening, with thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and light rain expected over the next few days.
Meanwhile, Talegaon Dabhade, located on the outskirts of Pune in Maval, witnessed heavy rain along with hailstorms around 4:30 pm on Wednesday, according to local resident Nilesh Garade.
