Authorities in Maharashtra's Raigad and Pune districts are coordinating the return of students who were part of the coaching institute group involved in the Diveagar beach tragedy, while the bodies of the eight deceased students are being transported to Alandi.
The students were from Winners Academy, a private coaching institute based in Alandi, Pune district. The group had travelled to Diveagar in Raigad district for a picnic when the tragedy occurred on Thursday.
Alandi Police Station Senior Police Inspector Bhima Narke said the post-mortem procedures of the deceased students had been completed in Raigad.
"The post-mortem procedures have been completed at the site. After completing all the formalities, the bodies have been sent from there to Alandi. They have not reached here yet, but they are expected to arrive in the next few hours," Narke said.
Four ambulances have already left after completing the required procedures, while the remaining ambulances are expected to leave shortly.
Maharashtra Minister Aditi Sunil Tatkare visited the hospital and met the families of the students following the Raigad tragedy.
Tatkare said the administration was in contact with the families and was coordinating with local authorities to facilitate the safe return of the students who survived the incident.
"The rest of the students have left for their houses, and we are in touch with the local administrations for their safe return," Tatkare said.
She also said the government would extend support to the bereaved families.
Pimpri-Chinchwad ACP Yogesh Ranjankar said the police were in touch with senior administration officials and local authorities in Raigad regarding the proceedings following the incident.
"We are in touch with the senior administration and local authorities in Raigad. We have let them know that we are ready to help with whatever legal action is currently underway there," Ranjankar said.
The coordination between authorities in Pune and Raigad is continuing as the remaining students return home and arrangements are made for the final rites of the deceased.
