Relations between public and police prospered during tenure: Borwankar

Outgoing Commissioner of Police Meeran Borwankar, who will be taking charge as Additional Director General (Prison) of the state, said that in her tenure as the police chief of the city she tried to strengthen relations between the police and the public by implementing projects like chowky strengthening, community policing, student internships with police departments and study circle for police officials.


"In the first six months after I took charge as chief of police, I made the blueprints of these projects and decided to implement them in the city. I can boast that to a large extent, these projects have been successful," Borwankar said. u00a0She said when she joined as commissioner of police, she wanted to implement eight-hour-shifts for the constabulary to reduce stress levels. u00a0

"I can proudly say that we successfully implemented the eight-hour-shift in several police stations despite having a manpower crunch in the department. My constables are real heroes as they have been working at the ground level and playing a pivotal role in solving cases and maintaining law and order," she said.u00a0

Borwankar said that as far as community policing was concerned, the project gained success as in several instances the public helped the police in solving cases. u00a0She cited the example of good coordination between the police and some residents of Kothrud helping to nab three hardened criminals at Swargate.u00a0


New police chief Gulabrao Pol

New Commissioner of Police Gulabrao Pol said that maintaining law and order, regularising traffic and reducing goondaism in the city would be his first priority.u00a0 u00a0
