Parents of the deceased RG Kar hospital doctor, who were allegedly injured during a police lathicharge on Saturday, have been admitted to a private hospital, an official said. This happened at a three-hour sit-in, one year after the tragedy, where hundreds of protestors demanded justice for the brutal rape and murder of the 31-year-old post-graduate trainee doctor at Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The mother, who reportedly suffered injuries to her forehead, hands, and back, underwent a CT scan and other diagnostic tests to assess the extent of both internal and external injuries, a hospital official said. "The condition of the father is comparatively better. Both are admitted in the same facility for treatment," an official added.

Leader of the opposition in West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari (BJP), who visited the hospital to meet the injured parents, described the mother's condition as "very serious". Adhikari, who had organised the protest in the first place, called it off, citing the parent's injury as the reason. He claimed that the victim's mother was "brutally lathi-charged by police and suffered injury on her forehead."

"Police pinned me to the ground. They broke my ‘shankha' [traditional conch shell bangle] and I sustained injury on my forehead," the victim's mother alleged.
Police, though, denied having used any force on the parents of the victim. "We have no information about the victim's parents getting beaten up by police at Park Street crossing. Police did not do anything to the parents. But their allegations will be duly investigated," DC (Port) Harikrishna Pai told reporters.
Without directly naming the BJP, the ruling TMC in a post on X said that those who profit from selective outrage "consider women's safety as just another political prop."
