Traffic cops managed to reduce traffic by 20 per cent during peak hours on a two-kilometre stretch on Sinhagad Road by syncing seven signals

In its bid to decongest the city roads, the city traffic police resorted to synchronisation of signals on a pilot-basis. And to their relief, the experiment conducted on traffic signals on Sinhagad Road has yielded a positive result.

Following the directives issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sarang Awad, seven signals on a two-kilometre stretch on the Sinhagad Road were synchronised which resulted in 20 per cent less traffic during morning and evening peak hours.
Speaking to mid-day, Awad said, "The main objective of synchronising signals during peak hours is to decongest the city roads. The signals are linked to a GPRS system, making it easier to implement changes as per our convenience.
But, at times, it becomes difficult to change the settings as signals are made by different manufacturers on a particular stretch. Now that our experiment has yielded a positive result, we'll soon identify other congested roads in the city and sync their signals."
