Telangana crisis: Curfew relaxed in violence-hit Andhra town

With improvement in the situation, the indefinite curfew in Vizianagaram town of Andhra Pradesh was relaxed for one hour Tuesday morning, police said

People came out to buy vegetables, food and other essential commodities as police and paramilitary forces kept a tight vigil to prevent any untoward incident in the fort town, about 700 km east of Hyderabad.

Long queues were seen at petrol bunks and ATMs. People demanded more relaxation saying one hour is not sufficient for them to buy the essentials.

The curfew was imposed Saturday after violent protests against the Centre's decision to divide Andhra Pradesh rocked the town in north coastal Andhra. The protestors targeted properties of state Congress chief Botsa Satyanarayana and his relatives.

Police said anti-social elements were behind the violence. More than 100 people have been arrested in connection with the violence.

Probe into the violence that took place Friday and Saturday is set to begin Tuesday.
