New Delhi: Tibetan emigres Wednesday demonstrated outside the Chinese embassy here against Chinese President Xi Jingping's visit to the country.
Police said that a group of Tibetan people carrying Tibetan flags collected outside the embassy around 11.30 a.m. and started raising slogans against the Chinese president, demanding independence for Tibet.
"At least 10 Tibetan protesters were detained outside Chinese embassy as they tried to break the barricades and violate norms," said a police official.
"The protesters were taken to Parliament Street police station and were released in a few hours," the official said.
One of the demonstrators said, "We demand our freedom, and that is what we are protesting for."
Following the protest, at least four companies of Rapid Action Force (RAF) were deployed outside the Chinese embassy.
Delhi Police have also deployed their personnel in different areas of the capital, especially near Majnu-ka-Tilla, which is a Tibetan colony in Delhi, to block any protest against the Chinese President.
The police have been directed to stop the Tibetan people heading towards the Chinese embassy in the Chanakyapuri diplomatic enclave, and to keep a watch on their movements.
Xi, who is on a three-day official visit to India, arrived in Ahmedabad Wednesday afternoon and will arrive in the capital later in the night.
