Close on the heels of the revelation of sexual abuse, mental and physical torture of inmates at Apna Ghar shelter home here, Haryana Police have now booked the warden of an institute for mentally challenged for allegedly sodomising a youth.

Sanjay Kumar, warden of Sharwan Institute for mentally challenged, has been booked on charges of sodomising a 22-year-old mentally disabled youth, a officer said Monday.

The victim's father, Navratan Sharma, a resident of Delhi, lodged the complaint with the police Sunday.

According to the Sharma, he had brought his son back home to Delhi a few days ago owing to ill health.

"My son during the medical treatment disclosed that he was sodomised by warden of the Sharwan Institute. I am shocked since after hearing this sordid act of the warden," Sharma said, seeking stern action against the warden.

"Sanjay Kumar, the warden, has been booked under section 377 (unnatural sexual assault) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). We have started probing into the matter and the accused will be arrested soon," said Sumit Kumar, Rohtak deputy superintendent of police.

Rohtak, the home town of Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, was in the news for the wrong reasons May this year after the racket at Apna Ghar shelter home was revealed.

A team of National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) rescued over 100 people, including children, girls and women from the house after carrying out a surprise raid here May 9.

The shelter house, which was being run by NGO Bharat Vikas Sangh for several years, has now been sealed by the state government.

The Rohtak police had registered a criminal case for molestation, rape, wrongful confinement and criminal intimidation against the shelter home in-charge Jaswanti and her son-in-law Jai Bhagwan. They were also booked under the Immoral Trafficking Act and Child Protection Act. Both are behind bars.
