IndiGo on Monday announced that aviation veteran Willie Walsh has assumed charge as its Chief Executive Officer (CEO), with the airline looking to strengthen its international expansion and consolidate its position in one of the world's fastest-growing aviation markets.
Walsh's appointment was first announced in March. He takes over the reins at a time when IndiGo is expanding its global footprint through new international routes, fleet additions, and a stronger focus on long-haul operations.
The airline said Walsh, who brings more than four decades of experience in the aviation industry, will lead its overall management and strategic direction. His responsibilities will include driving international growth, improving operational performance, strengthening the airline's network and commercial strategy, and enhancing customer experience.
Welcoming Walsh, IndiGo Managing Director Rahul Bhatia said the airline was entering its third decade and was poised for its next phase of growth.
"As IndiGo enters its third decade and stands poised for the next phase of its growth, I am delighted to officially welcome Willie as the airline's Chief Executive Officer. His extensive global experience in the aviation industry, combined with his operational and strategic expertise, will be instrumental as IndiGo accelerates its international expansion strategy," Bhatia said.
Walsh said he was joining the airline at a time when India was emerging as one of the world's fastest-growing aviation markets.
"With India becoming one of the world's fastest-growing aviation markets, the opportunities ahead for IndiGo are immense. There could not be a more exciting and opportune time for me to join IndiGo than now. I look forward to working with the entire IndiGo team to build on the airline's success and take it to greater heights globally," he said.
Walsh is among the aviation industry's best-known executives, having held senior leadership roles across several global carriers and industry bodies. He began his career as a pilot with Aer Lingus before becoming the Irish airline's CEO in 2001. He later served as Chief Executive Officer of British Airways from 2005 to 2011 and led International Airlines Group (IAG), the parent company of British Airways, Iberia and other airlines, between 2011 and 2020. Before joining IndiGo, he served as Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), representing airlines worldwide.
IndiGo said Walsh will work closely with the company's Board and senior leadership team as it pursues its long-term growth plans and expands its presence in domestic and international markets.
