The violence erupted shortly after two of the 15 individuals on a 35-day hunger strike were shifted to a hospital in critical condition on Tuesday evening. In response, the Ladakh Apex Body (LAB) Youth Wing called for intensified protests. PIC/ PTI

The protest movement, which seeks constitutional safeguards for Ladakh's tribal communities under the Sixth Schedule, has gained momentum in recent months

Flames and thick smoke engulfed parts of Leh as protesters torched vehicles and attacked the local BJP office, prompting authorities to impose prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the BNSS, banning gatherings of five or more people

The Sixth Schedule currently applies to select northeastern states, offering autonomous governance, judicial powers, and financial autonomy through regional councils

A fresh round of talks between the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and Ladakhi representatives — including the LAB and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) — is scheduled for October 6

On Wednesday, Leh observed a complete shutdown, with massive crowds gathering at the NDS Memorial Ground before marching through town, chanting slogans demanding statehood and tribal protections
