Chennai residents formed a human chain demanding the closure of Coromandel International's Ennore plant after an alleged ammonia gas leak from its pipeline.

The residents called for shutting the plant as they staged their protest at the Elliot's bach in Chennai on Sunday morning.

Previously, in December, panic ensued in Ennore when residents detected a strong smell owing to ammonia gas leak from a sub-sea pipeline owned by Coromandel International Limited.

Five individuals, at the time, had experienced discomfort due to the ammonia gas leak and were promptly shifted to a health facility for treatment.

The Tamil Nadu Environment and Forest Department then coordinated with local agencies to assess the situation and mitigate risks.

Medical and police teams were deployed to ensure the safety of residents and manage any emergencies arising from the leak.

Environmental officials had conducted a joint inspection of the plant and pipeline locations to assess the extent of the leak and its impact on the surrounding environment.

A protest and public outcry followed the incident that happened in December 2023. The residents expressed their deep-seated concerns regarding the safety and environmental impact of industrial operations in their locality.
