Protests erupted in Manipur after security personnel instructed staffers of a government bus carrying journalists to the Shirui Lily Festival in Ukhrul on May 20 to cover the state's name on the vehicle

Senior Manipur Congress leader Okram Ibobi Singh, attending the 61st death anniversary of former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru at Congress Bhavan, demanded that the "competent authority" responsible for ordering the removal of the state's name from a government bus apologize to the people of Manipur

He stated that Manipur's name has existed for centuries before its merger with India in 1949

Meanwhile, following his arrival from Delhi, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla took a helicopter from the airport to Kangla Fort, located about 300 metres from Raj Bhavan, amid protests along the 6-km route to the governor’s residence
