In a rare medical feat that may spell hope for women hoping to conceive, a team of doctors with Jaslok Hospital helped deliver a healthy baby girl to a mother with a rare genetic condition resulting in infertility.
The Mumbai-based 29 year old mother had suffered two miscarriages before coming to Jaslok hospital to find that she was suffering from a condition called Robertsonian Translocation that results in miscarriage and mental retardation in the infant. However, through preimplantation genital diagnosis, a healthy embryo was chosen and transferred to the mother's womb. The baby girl was delivered last week.
"We have five other mothers admitted with the disorder. Considering this case was successful, we are confident about trying the same procedure on them too," said Firuza Parikh, director of the Assisted Reproduction and Genetics department at the hospital.
