The much-awaited double-decker flyover at Savitribai Phule Pune University Junction was inaugurated on Wednesday evening by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

The flyover, built to provide a long-term solution to heavy traffic congestion in the busy area and the Ganeshkhind Road stretch, was formally opened for vehicular movement after the ceremony.

Speaking on the occasion, Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) Commissioner Dr Yogesh Mhase said that traffic movement from Aundh to Shivajinagar will now be smoother as one arm of the flyover has been opened for use. The remaining ramps towards Baner and Pashan are expected to be completed by October 2025.

The integrated two-tier flyover has been designed not just to decongest the area, but also to improve overall connectivity in the corridor. The scope of the project, at an estimated cost of R277 crore, also included widening Ganeshkhind Road up to 45 metres between Pune University and the College of Agriculture (RBI stretch) under the Pune Municipal Corporation's development plan.

The PMRDA officials informed that the construction work began in August 2022 after the design received approvals from the Executive Committee, Pune Municipal Corporation, and PMRDA. Earlier, two single-lane flyovers were demolished in August 2020 with the state government's approval to make way for this project. A 55-metre-long steel girder has been installed at the junction to ensure smooth traffic flow.

The flyover project is integrated with the upcoming Metro Line 3 (Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar), which is 23.20 km long and 88.51 per cent complete. Metro station No. 19 at University Chowk is under construction, and a dedicated staircase will connect the station to Aundh, Baner, and Pashan roads.

With the inauguration, thousands of commuters are expected to benefit daily, significantly reducing travel time and easing traffic snarls at one of Pune's busiest junctions.
