The Mumbai police issued a preventive order banning the bursting of firecrackers on public roads and streets and the use of high-intensity laser lights and searchlight beams across the city.
According to the order, the restrictions will come into force at midnight on October 6, 2026, and will remain in place until December 4, 2026. The order follows directions issued by the Bombay High Court on September 22, 2026, during a suo motu public.
Directions are aimed at controlling air and noise pollution and preventing hazards caused by street fireworks and high-intensity lighting. This is a welcome order and must be seen through the lens of safety and public order. It should not be communalised or politicised in any way. With people seeing through the charades by any leader meant to manipulate them.
We have witnessed, read, or may have unfortunately been the target of accidents resulting from firecrackers on public roads. From crackers being burst on pavements, sometimes at the feet of pedestrians, to right in front of cars, these are accidents that are waiting to happen and have happened in some cases.
A better option would be to have a couple of dedicated firecracker zones in a space-starved city like Mumbai that is challenging, where timing rules govern for how long one can burst crackers. Even the type of crackers may be restricted. This is only if absolutely necessary, as crackers add to the pollution too.
Lights may be used for festive occasions, but they should be within the rules. Let us make celebrations and mark important days with safety, joy, thoughtfulness, and empathy for all.
