The world is sitting on the edge of its seats as the FIFA World Cup football tourney reaches the last-eight stage. While the high-octane action is one to relish and cherish, it is time to look beyond the football field for some takeaways that serve as life lessons.
While Mexico fans were celebrating an earlier victory and fans had gathered in the streets, things got out of hand. The rush and crush of people, wild celebrations and crowds resulted in four people losing their lives. These fans died of suffocation. Though an investigation was launched after the tragedy, as with all these probes, they seem meaningless for those who have lost their loved ones. This shows us that even in triumph and joy, we must always have a heightened awareness about how we emote and act.
Though this relates to FIFA World Cup football, it can be true of any celebrations. These can turn deadly in an instant because of the sheer number of people. It is the fans who have to exhibit restraint and responsibility.
For those who want to mark a victory, weigh your choice before you make it in the street. Make sure you will be safe. Will you be overwhelmed by the sheer crowd? While the atmosphere may be a wonderful experience, is there potential for things to get out of hand? Is there a way one can exit while in the midst of a general party and enjoying? Do not go to celebrate if you have misgivings but you are pressured to do so. Do not cave in to peer pressure. Intuition is a strong thing and do not succumb to baits like being called a party pooper.
This should resonate here, seeing the absolute swell of people after cricket wins. One is as happy as the next person at an India win but savours that winning flavour safely.
