It is countdown to Diwali day and we see and read about a shopping surge everywhere. Shop owners starved of customers through the Covid-induced lockdowns, and considerably less spending power given that the virus has led to job losses, salary cuts and overall economic devastation, are hoping for a last-minute swell.

One cannot realistically expect spending to go back to the pre-Covid days, for a number of factors but retailers are optimistic about making up for some of the dry months that have preceded this season. We do also witness some crowds around markets and especially around roadside shopping as last-minute buys take place ahead of the festive week.

All power to retailers, who like others have suffered tremendously and should surely make the most of this little window to get some pleasing sales numbers. In Dadar, the sales seem brisk outside and there are boards everywhere telling people that valet parking is available at certain BMC-designated spots.

Brisk commerce certainly means that a beleaguered city is trying to get back on its feet. Yet, let us do so with utmost discipline, so that this does not become a one-off thing but goes on till party season.

It may be difficult to keep social distance outdoors especially in markets, yet a little discipline and awareness inside shops will ensure some safety. A big concern is the number of salespersons behind the counters or even on the roads, talking without masks. The customer must insist that shop staff wear masks, while serving them.

It is up to the buyers to carry sanitiser or wash hands as soon as possible once they reach home. Every little bit, which can be done practically and is feasible must be followed. Let not carelessness or deliberate defiance bring darkness into this festival of lights.
